I will just leave it at that and move on to a most recent finish, my hipster doll for the <a href="http://www.sewmamasew.com/2015/03/spectacular-softies-contest-submit-your-entry-here/">Sew Mama Sew softies contest</a>.<br />
<br />
When I heard about the contest, I knew I wanted to make something. I have made softies and dolls before, but I wanted to challenge myself to make something new and fresh for this one. I came up with the idea of a hipster doll, and I knew I wanted him to have a shaggy beard, arm tattoos and glasses. Then the skinny jeans and plaid shirt naturally followed.<br />

My husband took the doll with him to the local coffee shop for hipster cred. He loves an artful cappuccino from fair trade sourced growers.</div>

I had a blast making this guy (whom my husband named Trevor after spending the day with him). It was a great challenge and I would not have undertaken it without the prompt from Sew Mama Sew. The other submissions are so incredible too! There is so much great creativity out there, go check it out! #6weeksofsofties</div>

I'm excited! I finished my son's Curious Nature Hexies quilt this weekend and I was so happy to hand it off to him so he could sleep with it. Well, that didn't work out so well, he still wants to sleep in a Snuggie blanket that is huge and too hot. Oh well.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I'll go ahead and share to enjoy the finish with you instead!</div>

So I had to share a giveaway from <a href="http://www.maychappell.com/2012/09/11/is-it-time-for-a-giveaway/">May Chappell</a>, who is giving away Amy Butler 5/8ths and her Designer Star quilt pattern to a lucky person.<br />

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOhfMsIFA4nNetrLrOAlIjNGK_J5rU0AMScRqWK_Jw-QemhA3ywXoRVHHu_eRxQs7JLF-F-4PbS5pGbTRDVKE5BekfqSxfpVCVuqCYTuK36o0VLgg5Yl16HA-myHwhgBs3LJQ0W_q9sbQ/s1600/MBS-love-pin-win.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="268" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOhfMsIFA4nNetrLrOAlIjNGK_J5rU0AMScRqWK_Jw-QemhA3ywXoRVHHu_eRxQs7JLF-F-4PbS5pGbTRDVKE5BekfqSxfpVCVuqCYTuK36o0VLgg5Yl16HA-myHwhgBs3LJQ0W_q9sbQ/s320/MBS-love-pin-win.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div>
There is a new contest from Moda Bakeshop (as you may see above- I borrowed this jpeg from their site. I think that was the point of it.)<br />
<br />
I love a lot of projects there and get a lot of precuts, so it is a double bonus. There are great projects on there, including many I bookmarked long ago (pre-Pinterest) to make. Then I saw this <a href="http://www.modabakeshop.com/2012/03/isosceles-picnic-quilt.html#.UFVMtZOXRBk.pinterest">Isosceles Picnic Quilt</a> by Penny from <a href="http://sewtakeahike.typepad.com/">sewtakeahike</a>. Love it! Here's my type-A list of whys:<br />
<br />
<ol>
<li>I love the colors, the bright punches of solids with the more toned-down prints from Pezzy</li>
<li>I love the triangles. And there is a template included!</li>
<li>I love the size. Nice and big. Who wants a tiny little quilt to picnic on? It's like you are not planning on napping too. Get real.</li>
<li>I love the fact that it folds up and has handles to carry it. Now if it could just fold automatically. {sigh} I wish that for a lot of things.</li>
<li>I love that this is a free pattern from a talented designer, and that Moda is making a fun game of checking them all out. No really, I do.</li>
</ol>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Check out that cute pair of booties.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Details you say? Of course. I have had these earmarked since my son was a baby (NB that was 2.5 years ago...) in the <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Amy-Butlers-Little-Stitches-Ones/dp/0811861287">Little Stitches for Little Ones book from Amy Butler</a>. Never got around to them, and my son needed some slippers for preschool.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I tried to adapt the pattern for him, size 8/9, but the pattern only goes from 0-3 months up to 9-12 months. Quite a bit smaller. So I eyeballed about twice as big as the 9-12 month size, and it looked about right.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
But you never know until you sew it up right? Interfacing and 1/2" seams eat up a lot of size room. So they did not fit, Not even close. I think I may have managed to make an 18 month old size. Luckily I know some little ones who will grow into them nicely. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And I found another pattern (also adapted) for my son's slippers, and this time they fit! Likely because I only had to enlarge a 7/8 pattern one size. Still- victory!<br />

Quilt stats:<br />
Named Owen's Airplane<br />
40.5" x 42.5"<br />
Pattern <a href="http://makingitfun.blogspot.com/2012/02/designer-spotlight-sunday-sarah-jane.html">inspiration</a> from <a href="http://sarahjanestudios.com/blog/">Sarah Jane</a> and <a href="http://www.diaryofaquilter.com/p/about-me.html">Amy Smart</a>'s quilt for Quilt Market<br />
Fabric is DS Quilts Collection from Joann's, some solid blue and white and green print from my stash<br />
Quilted in straight lines with King Tut variegated thread<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Now that it is finished it is off to my sister in law to give to her at her son's birth. So excited about a new nephew and about finishing this special gift for him. I am proud of this piece.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And now I can start quilting my son's quilt! I have been putting it off because I want to quilt it at <a href="http://moderndomesticpdx.com/">Modern Domestic</a> on their gorgeously smooth Berninas, but that will take a day or two up north.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Anu suggestions? I was just thinking about following the lines of the hexies, but slightly off, so I am not stitching in the ditch. It seems busy enough without busy quilting.</div>

Made this quilt top (in the last 2 days) for my sister-in-law, having a baby next month. Got the idea and paper airplane template (enlarged here) from<a href="http://makingitfun.blogspot.com/2012/02/designer-spotlight-sunday-sarah-jane.html"> Michael Miller's blog, Making it Fun</a>. It is made from the Sugar Creek line from Denyse Schmidt for Joann's.</div>

I even had to borrow this picture from the <a href="http://portlandmodernquiltguild.blogspot.com/">Portland Modern Quilt Guild blog</a> because I have not taken one yet. Slacker to the max.<br />

This is my Curious Nature Hexies top, made for my son to replace his baby quilt. He even helped me with the sewing (and by that I mean sat in my lap while I sewed) and helped choose the Kona solids to mix in. The rest is Parson Grey's Curious Nature, thanks to Free Spirit fabrics.<br />

I should have been labeling all my quilts, I know, and from now on I will (I hope <a href="http://www.jaybirdquilts.com/2011/06/label-tutorial-spoonflower-way-part-2.html">the Spoonflower way, like Jaybird Quilts shows</a>) but for this I had to go simple because it had to be done soon. So I went the route of hand embroidered and spliced onto the back, and I like the way it came out.<br />

I also have been working on a backing for the<a href="http://sewwhilehesleeps.blogspot.com/2012/04/progress-sparkle-punch-quilt-top.html"> Sparkle Punch quilt</a>- just piecing the squares I cut (please do not ask why in the world I cut so many in the first place) to make a big stripe on the back and some randomly placed squares in the solids. My 2.5 year old has been very excited to help with sewing these- he is always asking.</div>

I have jumped on the hexagon train too, but only because it does not involve hand piecing. I am using the <a href="http://www.ladyharvatine.com/2010/03/hexagonia.html">machine piecing method outlined by Lady Havartine</a>. The above-mentioned toddler has outgrown his baby blanket and quilt and has been asking for a "big boy blanket." Enter those 6 yards of Curious Nature...</div>

I am adding a new project too, which is jumping to the top of my priority list: a baby quilt for my nephew due in September. His mom picked <a href="http://sarahjanestudios.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/airplane-quilt-3.jpg">this quilt</a>, which I am ecstatic to make as well, so everything is coming up roses there. Any advice for fabrics, besides Children at Play? I know we are going to switch the largely white background to a darker blue (because who needs the stain issues with a newborn) but am happy to have suggestions on the rest!</div>

Fun. And a pain in my bum. I started with a plan and then I could not resist my desire to improv everything. I used almost every scrap of fabric they sent to use for the block- and it seemed like plenty for two! It measures 9.5" square. The reverse looks almost as cool as the front.Amorettehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01757944341489276615noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-199378074396135472.post-60972415674038724212012-06-07T13:23:00.000-07:002012-06-07T13:35:35.926-07:00Slouch bag finish (+pattern fail)<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Over the weekend I received <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Linen-Wool-Cotton-Projects-Natural/dp/1590306481/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1339100167&sr=8-1">this book</a> from a friend who thought I would love the projects. I do! There are a ton of gorgeous things to make, and I knew the slouch bag would be the one I wanted to start with- and I had the perfect fabric! I have this organic dahlia print from <a href="http://www.harmonyart.com/prints/Evelyn.html">Harmony Art</a> (called Evelyn) in my stash, and I love the print for a big bag.<br />
<div>
I cut out my fabric and started sewing, but as I got to the part about adding the top bands and handles...it wasn't making sense. Turns out, this book is sorely in need of an errata page. The directions do not work. In addition, the handles would be way too small (and I am a stick-armed lady) and just attached to the band and not the bag itself. That seems less than sturdy to me, so I re-cut the handles to be 3 inches longer and then jerry-rigged the whole business to finish up the bag.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I love the way it turned out, though it was a challenge to figure out each step as I put it together. I also added a liner because I made it out of cotton and not linen, and I like the clean look without seams inside. Plus, this adds a pop of color to a simple bag. Lots of slouch and gathers, which is new and fun for me. I can't wait to gift it to my friend!<br />

This book is an excellent sequel to Ms. Hartman's first book, <a href="http://www.ctpub.com/productdetails.cfm?PC=2214">The Practical Guide to Patchwork</a>. It has many of the same elements for layout and projects- some easier, simple piecing progressing to more challenging work and different skill sets. Luckily for us, she also kept the alternate fabric suggestions at the end of each project along with example photos. This little touch really makes the difference for me; I love to see what else can be done, because often the first time I see a pattern I don't like it, but love it in different fabrics. These alternates are a stroke of genius. The other genius bit is instructions for completing the back, in case you don't want just a whole piece plain-jane backing. Plenty of the backs would make a great quilt on their own! I found at least 5 projects in here I would love to do immediately, and several more I put on my longer term to-do list.<br />
I knew I wanted to do a project for this review, so I just set my sights on making one block to see how well the instructions read, etc. Well, of course they read well, the author is an experienced pattern writer and blogger, but just to tell you, they are easy to use. There are lots of diagrams and photos to compare what you are doing at each step, which is extremely helpful. I'd rather everyone went way overboard with photos and diagrams for step-by-step rather than being stingy.<br />
<br />
The fail in my block is not Ms. Hartman's design or instructions but my fabric and color choices. I do love to experiment and see what I can get away with, and I had these old pillowcases and pair of pants lying around...well, bad news there.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
The non-quilting cotton fabrics were really difficult to work with and the lines got all wonky (not in the good way) and made the whole bit look rather, well, ill done is the nicest way to put it. I fought the urge to pitch it every step of the way past piecing block 3.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
My second mistake? Using fabric that behaves badly <i>and</i> has lines it in that make it super obvious that you have messed something up. Heh. It stands to reason (in hindsight) that there was a reason that the author used a lot of solids and few patterned fabrics- gets a little wild, even within the same line (Peacock Lane by Violet Craft from Michael Miller if you're asking. Not that this is its most shining use here.) Lesson learned and all that.<br />
<br />
So imagine I made better fabric choices for my block- it would be pretty cool huh?<br />
Stay tuned for another try at a block from the book, and eventually maybe a whole quilt. After Memorial Day though, for sure.<br />

What better match than a pencil case made with Little Apples scraps?<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The linen I used is actually cut up from an old pair of pants that my husband wanted to give away, and I grabbed them for this sew along! Yes, upcycling is very Portlandia. I am happy with the scrap details even if they are not perfect- that linen is hard to work with. Doesn't hold its shape very well.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPu0HeJL8gJSqWLCaExwBTMWpVIYXAXGqc6Au1FIPFX7lLOiD48ZMxsvVfcMnGcF5xaIKhVnHBRi1OevfdlKxv12rHgYBTm4a0usYWOCRaW8IXNO6GIdjUrvNVVgz1EwAHdS1LY2Ft6ow/s1600/DSC09284.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPu0HeJL8gJSqWLCaExwBTMWpVIYXAXGqc6Au1FIPFX7lLOiD48ZMxsvVfcMnGcF5xaIKhVnHBRi1OevfdlKxv12rHgYBTm4a0usYWOCRaW8IXNO6GIdjUrvNVVgz1EwAHdS1LY2Ft6ow/s320/DSC09284.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
As a consequence I ended up using the interfacing on the exterior rather than the interior as the directions read. I also seemed to have less room than necessary on the scrap band to hold the top in- did anyone else have this issue? I fell like instead is trimming it to 3" I should have left it a bit longer and pinned with room to spare. My top gets a little cramped in there (maybe you can see in the top photo).<br />

And great news for my ego.I'll start with the lucky duck part, since this is a chance for all (ahem, 29) of my followers to get in on something good.<br />
I won yet another awesome fabric prize from <a href="http://www.freespiritfabric.blogspot.com/">Free Spirit Fabric</a>- 6 one yard cuts of <a href="http://freespiritfabric.com/core-pages/gallery.php?gal_id=461">Valori Wells' Cocoon</a>!<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: xx-small;">from Free Spirit Fabrics</span></div>
You really should follow the blog. This is the third (!) time I have won fabric- I also got a full fat quarter bundle of Taza and 6 one yard cuts of Curious Nature. They are wildly generous.<br />
<br />
My big ego-building news is that I am going to have a quilt exhibited at the <a href="http://www.sistersoutdoorquiltshow.org/">Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show</a>! Portland Modern Quilt Guild has a special exhibition there this year and the board selected 20 quilts to represent us there, and my Little Apples Valentine quilt was chosen!<br />

<div style="text-align: left;">I wanted to start with the Zig Zag Tote from the book, but I was not sufficiently motivated 2 weeks ago! This pincushion project was perfect for me- I whipped it up in an hour or so, and am happy with the cute result. Of course, I made a few materials revisions, as the reader is urged to. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0YqBAFmMCQQpw7AXCf6IeomVlmMA6S3tJ_o5tqcwMYWJVAmwJDWu56NJClUdDMnbb-4DYrlPvMBk6PTjlwANi2d9mGvuZ5LNNzuZZC04-QCyXIuSQSu1tKK43Lu28ZmBOXjmH45E_r_4/s1600/DSC09267.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0YqBAFmMCQQpw7AXCf6IeomVlmMA6S3tJ_o5tqcwMYWJVAmwJDWu56NJClUdDMnbb-4DYrlPvMBk6PTjlwANi2d9mGvuZ5LNNzuZZC04-QCyXIuSQSu1tKK43Lu28ZmBOXjmH45E_r_4/s320/DSC09267.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div style="text-align: left;">Instead of linen I used double of my natural muslin I have on hand, and instead of rik rak or crochet lace (which are fantastic looking in the sample) I used a small bit of coordinating ribbon. I had this wacky fish bead as well, so I added that in lieu of a covered button. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-2ZKUbpvFtneB2ZNoTO7C_8o8eruGrugQV_dUXHYw6fsZQ9504JjTww58tju17INzyBoy1phK_ODswmDEduEJCExtsNo7eAYQWlMBtYB4FdXB84cROAV92wdHs_wcHjBiWP_miCXznBM/s1600/DSC09263.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-2ZKUbpvFtneB2ZNoTO7C_8o8eruGrugQV_dUXHYw6fsZQ9504JjTww58tju17INzyBoy1phK_ODswmDEduEJCExtsNo7eAYQWlMBtYB4FdXB84cROAV92wdHs_wcHjBiWP_miCXznBM/s320/DSC09263.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div style="text-align: left;">Yay for improvising! I did have some cotton tape, so I drew a little leaf pattern in ink to echo my Parisville damask dot print. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-QsOJ8JZv-o_NbxtYFwghKGERvgR8w93i7MM9m6wIm_bKv-RgWQsodwXtxFdknRMJPavWhEAeaeclwBmMg1Yue6NJYJckp-0Z6dZurUVeOjuwh1krpNGa6uFQaRseihQAIEnCLdzW75M/s1600/DSC09268.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-QsOJ8JZv-o_NbxtYFwghKGERvgR8w93i7MM9m6wIm_bKv-RgWQsodwXtxFdknRMJPavWhEAeaeclwBmMg1Yue6NJYJckp-0Z6dZurUVeOjuwh1krpNGa6uFQaRseihQAIEnCLdzW75M/s320/DSC09268.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div style="text-align: left;">The fabric choices and trim make a lot of difference. I could see myself making many more versions for gifts and giving them all a unique personality for each recipient. I also did use <a href="http://ayumills.blogspot.com/2012/04/zakka-style-sew-along-week-3-zakka.html?showComment=1334676072387#c1242994569825158500">Ayumi's tip</a> for using a glue stick to secure the ribbon trim and the cotton tape- genius! Much better than pinning.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">This book is very well thought out. I had no idea when I started in, but it is a collaborative book, so it has projects from many different people in it, all just along the Zakka aesthetic spectrum. I am really excited to sew more projects from the book. There are a huge range of them, from quilts to softies with their own pillow pocket (my next earmarked project) and many in between. This is a great book for gift ideas, and there are many different levels of time commitment and difficulty. I have my top favorites to try:</div><div style="text-align: left;">1. Sweet Sugar Cookie Sack</div><div style="text-align: left;">2. Little Pocket Pillowcase (the one with the softie)</div><div style="text-align: left;">3. Nesting Boxes</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">The directions for the pincushion were very clear and simple, and I did find myself flipping to the front page a lot to refer to the photo, though that is less important the less attached you are to making yours look like the book sample. I think the best part of this sew along is seeing all the variations people are making to the project- it really makes them all sing their own tune. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">Thanks to C&T publishing for sending me the book to review as part of the Creative Troupe! I will be using this book for many projects to come. (P.S. - If you are a blogger, check out <a href="http://www.ctpub.com/client/client_pages/creative_troupe.cfm">the Creative Troupe program</a>. Nice perks.)</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />

</div>
This month for Portland Modern Quilt Guild we had a challenge to complete a block using Michael Miller's new Couture Cottons line- the colors were chosen by the Guild's board and the fabric donated by Michael Miller. Big thanks to them! It was fun to play with solids.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
The block measures 15.5" x 18.5". Kathy Miller is going to select 16 of the blocks from PMQG to be made into a quilt for Spring Quilt Market. Not gonna lie, it would be exciting to be chosen.<br />

I winged it all, except measuring the green for the background. I was heavily influenced by Alissa Haight Carlton, especially <a href="http://www.handmadebyalissa.com/another-finished-quilt/">this quilt</a>, which has been on my to-make list for a while.<br />

But I do have a lot to share, and I'll try not to overburden this post! I have some thanks to parcel out first.<br />
<br />
I recently received this beautiful fat eights bundle of Peacock Lane from a giveaway at <a href="http://veryberryhandmade.co.uk/">Very Berry Handmade</a>, from the UK shop <a href="http://www.misformake.co.uk/">M is for Make</a>. I have no solid plans yet for it, but I better make it lovely, since the designer of the fabric is in my quilt guild.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxTbox9vgEoumEyikoSTsJXoM1mfj1FBrF4LH5mMaa-3iMs7fkRfhcsYaVRtHd5yE-x5osnjB0g1FlZlJZ7OaSKyIKM-onO2Pxxdsv_QSbb3sy4v-vX6iF3kV_sS2frnF6ABTx1u9bAO0/s1600/DSC09009.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxTbox9vgEoumEyikoSTsJXoM1mfj1FBrF4LH5mMaa-3iMs7fkRfhcsYaVRtHd5yE-x5osnjB0g1FlZlJZ7OaSKyIKM-onO2Pxxdsv_QSbb3sy4v-vX6iF3kV_sS2frnF6ABTx1u9bAO0/s320/DSC09009.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>I also won this adorable wall hanging from <a href="http://nelliesniceties.blogspot.com/">Nellie's Niceties</a>. The center of the Dresden is embroidered with a woodland scene, and the whole bit is hand quilted. I am lucky to have it! I would not make anything like this myself, since it is beyond the scope of my skills!<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2ZidxsY7168sMm_FuyfvYtlxbR8Mi2LG8YziMs1_O73u_Piy9Mv7soEejh6pZffPmRyGCkl81qtaosJsZJqPJash1szb0jzRgRysd623QNBPPiLY7qucX7ZDTL5rlcx-F6A88QVHkn5A/s1600/DSC09139.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2ZidxsY7168sMm_FuyfvYtlxbR8Mi2LG8YziMs1_O73u_Piy9Mv7soEejh6pZffPmRyGCkl81qtaosJsZJqPJash1szb0jzRgRysd623QNBPPiLY7qucX7ZDTL5rlcx-F6A88QVHkn5A/s320/DSC09139.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
Lastly, I won 6 one yard cuts of the new Parson Grey Curious Nature line. I am so psyched to work with these, I am thinking of attacking a hexagon quilt finally, because they would look fabulous in one. Now to get motivated to do the cutting. These I won from the <a href="http://www.freespiritfabric.blogspot.com/">Free Spirit blog</a>, which is always having low-entry giveaways that are very generous. I recently won an entire fat quarter bundle of Taza from them too.<br />
<br />
Whew! Now that I have caught up with all that, some sewing to show. I made another mini quilt for a birthday gift for a one year old. We call her Petradactyl, because her name is Petra and my husband thinks she sounds like a pteradactyl when she yells. (You know, because we all know firsthand what a pteradactyl sounds like.) And since I have been experimenting with reverse applique lately, I had to try it out again.<br />

I made this mini quilt in response to the Modern Mini Quilt Challenge from Ellison Lane Quilts. It measures 19" x 21.5" and is super cool.<br />
<a href="http://ellisonlane.blogspot.com/" target="_blank"><img alt="Modern Mini Challenge" src="http://i1127.photobucket.com/albums/l623/ellisonlanequilts/buttons/modernminichallengebutton125.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
I have wanted to try making a reverse applique quilt with patchwork ever since I saw <a href="http://pieceandpress.blogspot.com/2011/05/heros-nemesis-or-orange-lizard.html">this amazing quilt</a> from Dan at Piece and Press. I knew it would take many tries to pull off an amazing piece like this, so I wanted to get trying! I love sharks and worked in shark research for a summer in college, so I knew what animal I had to make. They are as old as dinosaurs, so the connection was complete.<br />
<br />
I made the grey patchwork square first, and loved the way it looked all on its own, but I forged on. I took out my shark books and found some pictures I liked, then drew them only as lines to see how well they would translate to patchwork. I picked this shape because I thought the plain side view was not graphically interesting enough. It is a little played out, in other words.<br />
<br />
I loved the shark after I cut it out, but it was clear I needed to add the eye and the mouth and nose lines for the applique to read as a shark. So this is really a skill builder for me. I almost called in my sister but resisted.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizeXQPLxuLX0dxcLYcsJ-JM8Yhcun3rGg-097cVO4Guy0RF3cr8REAhqfbsvZnZqsC91P9X3PWZxHagyfWfr-hxrzICXIgPUFpnx8H_T-fdZw-pDO86hR_zxmz8EDF4EXEZaiQl3SZArQ/s1600/DSC09131.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizeXQPLxuLX0dxcLYcsJ-JM8Yhcun3rGg-097cVO4Guy0RF3cr8REAhqfbsvZnZqsC91P9X3PWZxHagyfWfr-hxrzICXIgPUFpnx8H_T-fdZw-pDO86hR_zxmz8EDF4EXEZaiQl3SZArQ/s320/DSC09131.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>Then I quilted on some wave lines to look like water, which I am pretty pleased with. I tried variegated blue thread thinking it would look cool, but it just got lost in the blue fabric, so white it is.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjP8JIV_1wwuWg02w7IHTsopkGITwMDppY9ZPcAylU9g_sxQVK9yYUnHDG70sWIrAtLKe263Y9BuTzTcrCYOuVCFaTFWjjZQRPFT0sOFj4UcsTFaFgOu_pcyIp0qnrcsQ6tbViZVfp2WMw/s1600/DSC09132.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjP8JIV_1wwuWg02w7IHTsopkGITwMDppY9ZPcAylU9g_sxQVK9yYUnHDG70sWIrAtLKe263Y9BuTzTcrCYOuVCFaTFWjjZQRPFT0sOFj4UcsTFaFgOu_pcyIp0qnrcsQ6tbViZVfp2WMw/s320/DSC09132.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
Overall, good lessons, fun time making it, and a nice piece for my shark loving household. Case in point: my toddler identifies the size of his bites relative to shark species and their size,<br />
i.e. a lemon shark bite < tiger shark bite < <i>megalodon</i> bite.<br />
<br />
Yes, we are bio (and shark) nerds. Love it.<br />

I finished mine in about 3.5 hours, even doing the design work, fabric picking and photos.<br />
<br />
This project is for you if you want a break from precision quilting and sewing, if you need to make something quickly for a certain holiday, and if pink and red are not your valentine's most favorite colors.<br />
<br />
I love it for some of these factors, but mostly for the <i>wabi</i> factor of it: an interpretation of a Japanese aesthetic embracing the beauty in irregular, organic work with the process evident. I posted a bit about this <a href="http://sewwhilehesleeps.blogspot.com/2012/02/i-heart-february-post-preview-of-my.html">yesterday</a>. Okay, enough background. Here we go!<br />
<br />
(As I mentioned, this is my first tutorial, so please let me know if something is unclear or doesn't work in practice. I will edit to fix as needed.)<br />
<br />
<b><i>Finished size:</i></b> 21.5" x 21"<br />
All seam allowances 1/4"- or close<br />
<i><b>Fabric needs: </b></i><br />
This project is perfect for scraps, which is all I used, all stuff I pulled from my stash and none larger than 22" x 22".<br />
For the strips: 6 pieces, minimum 19" long and 1.5" high. (You could use 12 for less repetition.)<br />
For the square to sew strips to: 14" x 14" (I used natural muslin here and for front piece)<br />
For the overlaying front piece: 21" x 21"<br />
For backing: 22" x 22"<br />
For binding: 1.5" strips to get 85" in length (generous)<br />
<br />
<b><i>Assembly:</i></b><br />
<br />
1. Sew your 6 strips together for the heart piece on the long side, right sides together, and press. I auditioned several arrangements and then changed my mind on the fly. Its part of the project! Embrace it.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg77IBDKjIZGzmrNsnSvYVinFtK5orP_1zZFn2g2p23IgAP43dNYrtHcSyLvvfxlqYW3AeGyGwlStTfh5tvjQ7BeritAqYHKGqg_iGy0ek_GQB5CDxw67ZNRbJYLk8Ir-aHNcBv8mc8D1A/s1600/DSC09015.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg77IBDKjIZGzmrNsnSvYVinFtK5orP_1zZFn2g2p23IgAP43dNYrtHcSyLvvfxlqYW3AeGyGwlStTfh5tvjQ7BeritAqYHKGqg_iGy0ek_GQB5CDxw67ZNRbJYLk8Ir-aHNcBv8mc8D1A/s320/DSC09015.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">2. Once assembled, cut from the short side into 1" strips (there is a little leeway in the 19" so you can mess up). This way you end up with strips of little blocks of each fabric.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj42b5dHj1aZ6yNUwlM-xsAIIoX3xf1005q0pCQ_XEvgVvcGGtff_RRM5uUjSxAvyqvaj05G_t-T1yYi4E845j15Txs0nVCMiUQyt5HxLQFF8xp0NMPs9TbYkPpQd6ngUNCdL9wNa-kE18/s1600/DSC09019.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj42b5dHj1aZ6yNUwlM-xsAIIoX3xf1005q0pCQ_XEvgVvcGGtff_RRM5uUjSxAvyqvaj05G_t-T1yYi4E845j15Txs0nVCMiUQyt5HxLQFF8xp0NMPs9TbYkPpQd6ngUNCdL9wNa-kE18/s320/DSC09019.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

Now you are ready to place the 22" x 22" muslin square on top of the pieced strips. I sketched a rough heart at this point to place my pins, since we will be sewing in a heart shape, and I do best with multiple guidelines. Plus, it helps to make sure you keep your heart over the pieced strips and don't stray too much. I did a single fold raw-edge binding (which is why it seems so small) to keep with the <i>wabi</i> look. Fold your 1.5" strips in half and press, then begin placing in the center of the bottom. When you come to the corner, you can still do the mitered edge look by just moving your strip over to the next edge and coaxing the fold nice and flat. I sewed close to the raw edge, more like a finishing stitch than a 1/4" binding stitch. So I whipped up this heart hanging. I hope I will get my first tutorial written for it later this week.<span style="color: red;"> Edited to add</span>: here is the <a href="http://sewwhilehesleeps.blogspot.com/2012/02/wabi-heart-mini-quilt-my-first-tutorial.html">link for the tutorial</a>!<br />
<br />
First off, I have been doing some reading on Zen and also on architecture- I know, bear with me. The book was called <i>The Architecture of Happiness</i> by Alain de Botton. In the very last bit, he writes about the Japanese concept of beauty and transience called <i>wabi-sabi</i>. (With apologies to any Japanese readers or scholars- I will misconstrue this, but only to the best of my abilities and intentions). The idea is that our ideas of beauty lie largely in perfection, while wabi-sabi is more about appreciating the beauty in asymmetry, organic, irregular objects or activities. Thus, the idea for this project was born and executed.<br />
<br />
The whole aesthetic of this project is to embrace the raw, rough parts of fabric and sewing and take a break from the measured, perfect angles that quilting often takes. For me, it is a psychological break from my usual sewing room thinking.<br />
